St. Anne´s Hospital

19th Century Construction
A completely new hospital was built on this site in the 1860s, following the trend of significant buildings in Brno being designed by leading architects from Vienna. St. Anne's Hospital was designed by Theophil Hansen, a renowned architect who also worked on other notable structures in Brno, such as Besední dům and the Klein Palace on Náměstí Svobody (the one with the distinctive iron balconies).

Design Evolution
Originally, the hospital had a slightly different design. Over time, some parts were added, altering its appearance. Behind the building, there's a beautiful chapel also designed by Hansen, which is worth visiting and exploring.
Historical Significance
There's a plaque on a building opposite the hospital commemorating a figure tied to this area.
Original Purpose
The hospital's original purpose was to provide medical care to Brno's growing population, which expanded rapidly during the city's industrial boom. Its state-of-the-art facilities at the time included wards for various medical specialties, operating theatres, and a chapel designed to serve the spiritual needs of patients and staff.
Design Features
Hansen's designs emphasized hygiene and functionality, making St. Anne's a model for hospital construction in the region.
Role in Crisis
Throughout its history, the hospital has played a critical role during times of crisis. During World War I, it was used to treat wounded soldiers, and during World War II, it became a hub for emergency medical care in a city heavily affected by bombing raids.
Post-War Development
Post-war, the hospital continued to adapt, expanding its facilities and modernizing its operations to meet the demands of contemporary medicine.
